McDonald's sandwich has been dethroned

It surpassed McDonald's, last year, and became the largest chain restaurants in the world, depending on the number of units, according to The Wall Street Journal.

It's American Subway chain, which late last year had 33,749 units worldwide. Subway is a known sandwiches producer.

Subway winning strategy has been in opening new restaurants in unusual places such as schools, zoos or showrooms. McDonald's had, instead, 32,737 units. Subway has surpassed McDonald's after nine years depending on the number of open sales centers in the US market.

US restaurant industry players trying to gain momentum, especially in Asian countries, given that, in the US market is saturated, and consumption is affected by high unemployment. For example, Starbucks has announced plans to triple the number of units in China.
